Ally is a major romantic who refuses to believe that love can't triumph all. She often finds herself working on cases where love, men vs women, and social justice are key issues. She is easily distracted by cases where there are romantic notions and can find a way to relate them back to her personal life. She is quirky, awkward, and in a constant swirl of laughable drama all while searching for love and personal happiness.
We are introduced to Ally as a woman who once had a great love with a boy she has known all her life. She follows him to law school only to have him break up with her. Cut to Ally leaving her current job over an ongoing sexual harassment case she has against a co-worker. She then runs into Richard Fish, a friend from law school, who she didn't like so much who offers her a job. Ally takes the job only to find out that Billy, her past love, works there as well and that he is married. Ally spends much of the season going on dates with different men trying to forget and get over what she once had with Billy.
Ally continued a relationship with Dr. Greg Butters until she and Billy kissed and she was fraught over that kiss. She tried to get Greg back by making him jealous by using an escort from Ling's escort service but by the end of the season, she remained single.
At the start of this season, Ally had sex with a carwash epmloyee who turned out to be the groom of her client. In the middle of the season, her former boyfriend Billy dies in front of her in court due to a brain tumour. At the end of season 3. Ally meets Brian and brings him to meet her parents with disastrous results, especially from her father.
At the start of this season Ally breaks up with Brian, because he asked her to move in with him and she thought he was so boring and she did not want to spend her entire life with him. After a girls' party at her home, she gets an idea to be more "active" with guys. With this idea in mind, she starts relationship of a father and son, because she dates them both. She figures it out when her older boyfriend invites her to a dinner with his children. Later on, She dates Larry Paul but soon find out he is divorced and during Christmas time, she learns later he has a son with a former girlfriend. At the end of the season, Ally breaks up with Larry who moves to Detroit to be closer to his son and ex-girlfriend.
In Season 5, Ally briefly dates Victor Morrison but breaks up with him. She leaves Cage, Fish & McBeal - she was promoted to Senior Partner since John Cage left the firm temporarily - as she has to bring her daughter to New York City and help her heal from a nervous breakdown.
- Lara Flynn Boyle audition to play Ally. Although she didn't win the role, David E. Kelley liked her so much that he wrote the character of Helen Gamble on "The Practice (1997)" just for her.
