This page covers the music in Ally McBeal.
Overview[]
Ally McBeal is one of the few 1990's TV series that included songs in each episode. Music helped depict the characters' thought and emotions, most specifically from Ally McBeal herself. It complements the storyline in each episode. Ally McBeal was most unique amongst 90s TV shows where the characters themselves sang the song in episodes and many actors for example, Jane Krakowski, Lisa Nicole Carson as well as Robert Downey Jr. were highly-trained vocalists, along with the key vocalist for the series, Vonda Shepard. Other actors such as Peter MacNicol, Greg Germann - to some extent - and Calista Flockhart also could sing. Vonda's own songs were featured in many episodes.
Ally McBeal was also unique as real-life artists guest-starred in many episodes. These include Barry White, Al Green, Josh Groban, Tina Turner, Sting, Elton John and many others. Along with Vonda in the various bar scenes, three backup singers known as the 'Ikettes' - Renée Elise Goldsberry, Vatrena King and Sy Smith would also perform. There also would be band members, picked by Vonda and Danny Lux, the series' music coordinator cum composer.
